My Review: 2009 Annual Goals

Well, looking back on 2009, a lot has changed. And I didn’t do very well in accomplishing the goals that I set out for myself … and part of it is situational, but most of it was me. I’m going to work very hard in 2010 to make sure I achieve the goals that I’ve set for myself.

2009 Finance Goals:

  • $5,000 in Emergency Fund. FAIL! I’m at $4,040, so I didn’t quite get there. I had some setbacks this year, mostly including getting into that car crash and having to pay the damages associated with that.
  • $10,000 in Travel Fund. FAIL! We ended up putting our trip on hold, and the $ I had earmarked for Travel went towards a down payment on a new car.
  • $25,000 balance in RRSP Portfolio. CHECK! I have far surpassed the $25k mark, and am looking to reach a $30k portfolio by tax time. Although that might be a little ambitious.
  • Stay debt-free. FAIL! I ended up buying a new car. But on the bright side, it’s 0% interest for the duration of my payments.
  • Make an additional $5,000 above and beyond my regular FT job. CHECK! I am so flipping happy and proud to say that due to some extra income at the very last minute, I have come out of 2009 earning an extra $5,268!

2009 Personal Goals

  • Lose 10 lbs. FAIL! Due to some holiday indulging, I weigh the same as I did at the start of the year – just about 135 lbs. Sigh.
  • Climb 5.11 routes. FAIL! I’ve been working on 5.10a-c routes. But we are set on making this a priority for 2010 because of our potential trip to Thailand.
  • Climb 4 mountains. FAIL! We’ve climbed 3, technically (Grimface Mtn, Stone City Mtn, Alouette Mtn). We also attempted to climb Joffree TWICE, but both times it didn’t happen.
  • Go on a trip with my sister. CHECK! We went on a cruise to Alaska! :)

Looking at this list of goals that I didn’t accomplish is a pretty huge wake-up for me. I need to focus and dedicate more energy into improving myself.

How do you keep track of a year's worth of income/spending? I'm trying to start a bunch of spreadsheets to do just that but it's hard to stay organized. I feel like a robot experiencing information overload: "error! error! #4432784 information over-load"

Hey Gina, if you'd like I can e-mail you a blank template of the Excel spreadsheet that I use? Might not work for you since I built it for myself, but it might help you get started at least! Let me know. :)
