$600 for a pair of hiking boots, oh my!

So I finally bit the bullet and bought mountaineering boots. After this past weekend, I knew I wanted to get new boots. BF said there’s no point in getting a sturdier pair of hikers (which would have run me $275-300), and that I should go straight to mountaineering boots – because when I’m regularly doing mountaineering, I’ll need to buy boots anyway. So in the long run, it will save me money. I’m still going to use my current boots for light hiking.

Are you ready for it? I bought the La Sportiva Nepal Evo boots for $595 ($535 + tax). O.M.G. I’m still in shock that I paid so much for boots (but aren’t they badass looking?). BF’s parents were with us in the store, and his mom generously gave me $100 to go towards the boots as an early birthday present (she said she was going to get me a $100 gift certificate anyway, most likely to MEC).

My total for the boots was $495. *cries*

I tried to find a cheaper pair of mountaineering boots. I tried the La Sportiva Trango boots for $325 (multiple times – why don’t they fit as nicely?!), as well as the Scarpa Summit boots for $435. But they just didn’t fit as well as the ones I ended up buying. And trust me, I’ve tried for 6 months to try to find a cheaper alternative. I’ve looked online. I’ve looked in the USA – and when it comes down to it, the boot that fits the best are the one that you’re supposed to get. And because I have such problem feet, I know the consequences of having inadequate footwear.

So after 6 months of contemplation, I just did it. It’s a big purchase – a HUGE purchase. And it’s a purchase I didn’t really need to make. But if I want to keep hiking (and doing more advanced stuff – especially in the wintertime) and doing what we like to spend our time doing, I needed to make the investment.

How will I pay for such a huge expense? I suspended the $500 auto-debit into my Travel Fund for this Friday, and will instead put that money onto my credit card to pay it off. I would have taken the $$ out of my Travel Fund anyway to pay for them (and had put them in my expense spreadsheet in my overall Travel Budget).

So there you go. My $495 purchase.
