I’ve recently found inspiration from Two Guys Around The World – it’s a website run by 2 guys who decided to travel the world on $10k. Which is exactly what BF and I plan on doing. The only difference is they ran out of money after 7 months, and hopefully by planning our trip and avoiding expensive countries, we won’t run into that problem. They went to South America and Australia/New Zealand – super expensive places to travel. Our only flight (aside from entry/exit flights) is going to be out of Africa. Where, we’re not sure yet. Whichever provides the cheapest option to connect to the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Granted, they were doing the whole couch surfing thing which would really bring down the cost of living, but I really really don’t think that we’ll be doing that at all. It makes me really uncomfortable just thinking about it, to be honest. I’m a naturally shy person, and to be put in such a position that I’d be sleeping on a stranger’s couch in a foreign country? I’d rather pay the money to stay in a hostel. And I know that they say you will get used to it and it’s a great thing to do if you want to immerse yourself in the culture. But still. No thanks.
Aside from Africa (which for the most part, I will be paying for), we will be spending our time in relatively cheap countries – with the bulk of our time in SE Asia. From the original list of countries that we wanted to see, we’ve definitely whittled it down to a list that’s actually doable. The thing that Two Guys Around The World found out was, don’t try to see the entire world at once. We were (rather, I was) pretty ambitious at the very beginning, but I think we’re coming closer to figuring out a route that works for us.
Anyway, I thought it was super cool that one of the guys was nice enough to e-mail me! :) When we go traveling and start up our own travel blog, I hope to be able to write about our success in sticking to a budget. It’s like the ultimate budgeting challenge – you either do it properly and have fun for a year, or the party’s over and you have to go home.
