Potential new budget

On the ferry this past weekend, BF and I talked about when I would move in, and how we would split expenses. And also how we would rearrange his space to accommodate my things.

I think I would definitely be moving in this summer. Whether it’s June or July or August, I’m not sure. I think we’re leaning towards June.

We would buy a used fridge (a quick peruse around Craigslist tells me we could get a decent used one for $200-400), and probably a couch. My futon is too small and uncomfortable, and BF’s couch is old and disgusting (and not worth getting reupholstered). Not sure if we’d buy used or new. My first instinct is to buy a new couch that will last us for years. But the frugal side of me is going to check out Craigslist as my first option. Furniture is so expensive!

Right now, my budget is around $1,400-1,600/month (check out February/March/April). Here is a mock up of a budget I did for when I move in:

New budget notables:

  • $100 rent – We figured I would put in some money for utilities and general up keep expenses for the house. It’s not set at $100, but that’s what was initially discussed.
  • $200 food – This hasn’t changed. We decided that we would buy separate groceries until we can figure out how to work together in the kitchen.
  • $100 transportation – a 2-zone bus pass. My commute is going to go from a 20 min. round trip walk, to about 2 hrs. round trip on public transportation. Which sucks, but is totally worth it. BF suggested that he try to switch his hours so that he finishes work at 4:30pm instead of 4pm, so that most days he can just pick me up on the way home (unless either of us have something planned).

So, I will be able to save an additional $550-$750/month on top of what I’m already saving. With an average net monthly income of about $3,000 … that means I have the potential to save well over $2,000/month. :D
