Spanish basketball players defend controversial photo

Just to get off-topic for a moment…

This picture to the left shows players on Spain’s Olympic basketball team using their fingers to apparently make their eyes look more Chinese.

It’s been running as a newspaper spread in Spain since last Friday.

As a very proud Asian-Canadian, I find this picture to be quite offensive. But perhaps that’s because I’m always aware of people who like to make fun of, or put down Asian people. Maybe I’m being too sensitive, but as a Canadian-born Asian woman living in Vancouver, I’ve been a victim of racism a number of times before. So to see this kind of photograph on an international stage like this? Not cool, Spain. Not cool at all.
