The cost of going home

I’m excited to be going home today, although I’m not sure how much it will cost me since BC Ferries recently raised their rates again (as of August 1st). Looking on their site, it looks like it was raised to $14.50 one-way ($13 + $1.50 fuel surcharge), but I can’t be sure.

$30 round trip to go home isn’t exactly pricey when you think about it … but it’s about 45 min. of driving to-and-from both ferry terminals … and if BF isn’t able to drive me and pick me up from the Vancouver terminal, I would have to pay an additional $20 each way for bus fare. And then it starts to get super expensive and my travel time starts to add up in a big way. I’m lucky that he’s so willing to drive me to the ferry terminal, even though I always feel bad about it since it’s so out of the way.

So, minimum, I’m paying $30 to go home for the weekend. I’ll be going home on average, twice a month starting in October until May because of my PT job on the island. Of course, the money I make at the PT job offsets the travel costs, so it’s worth it to spend time with friends/family and play field hockey. But, I also might be getting a raise at the PT job, so we’ll see. Probably not though, and I don’t really care.
