Well, the wedding plans for September are sorting themselves out nicely. The bride has paid for our bridesmaid dresses, so I won’t have to worry about that. I do have to get silver shoes though (yuck), and pay (I think) for my hair/make-up to get done.
So, cost breakdown will probably go like this:
- $250 – bachelorette party. Includes travel costs, food, drinks, accommodation. I don’t even know the details yet, but I’m hoping it will be cheaper than this.
- $50 – wedding shower gift.
- $26 – ferry to the island and back the weekend before the wedding. To get my dress altered and help the bride with any last minute details.
- $112 – ferry to the island and back for the wedding. Bringing a car over.
- $100 – gas.
- $150 $75 – wedding present. I want to get them a bottle of wine (the one I’m thinking of is around $25) and either a $50 gift certificate to Muffet & Louisa, or something off their gift registry.
- $100 – hair and make-up appointment.
- $50 – shoes. I don’t know what the dress looks like, but I’m hoping I can get away with flat sandals or something like that. Since I will never wear silver shoes again, I don’t want to spend a lot.
- $150 – my share of accommodation. 2 nights at the resort where the wedding is being held.
- $100 $75 – food. Since we rented a 2-bedroom cabin with a fridge (I think?), I’m hoping to go to the grocery store and load up on food, so we don’t have to eat out for every meal. I know that we will have to go out for some meals though.
TOTAL = $1,088 $688
Wow. That’s unreal. To think that it’s going to cost that much, and I only have to travel to the island to go to it. The wedding is in 2 months, so I’d better start saving.
Now, for the wedding in Ontario. I’m trying to really keep the costs down, since it’s only 2 weeks after the other wedding. I don’t have all the details yet, but here’s what I know so far:
- $570 – flight to Toronto. Gross. I’ve seen it as low as $500, but that was for a seat sale, and I think it’s too far away right now to book seat sales. At least I haven’t seen any yet.
- $200 – 2 or 3 nights of accommodation. I will probably stay with my friend for one night (he’s going to be my pretend-date for the wedding since BF can’t go). But then we’ll have to pay for at least 2 nights in Toronto, and we’ll either have to get separate rooms or a double room.
- $200 – car rental. I might need to rent a car, so I’ll have to throw it in the budget.
- $100 – gas. I’m pretty sure my friend will be driving his car up to meet me in Toronto, so I won’t have to rent a car anymore. But I will want to pay for all the gas we use.
- $150 $100 – food. I’m hoping to take advantage of continental breakfasts at whatever hotel we stay at – but even so, I’m going to budget around $40/day for food.
- $100 – dress. I have absolutely no wedding-appropriate clothing. In fact, I only own 2 dresses – one is a Christmas party dress, and the other is black. Both would look stupid at a wedding. I’m hoping to buy one dress that will last me through next year’s wedding season as well – and no I don’t care if people see me in the same dress twice.
- $150 $75 – wedding present. A bottle of wine and something else. Same as the first wedding. Original? No.
TOTAL = $1,400 $1,145
It’s a lot of money to spend, but these girls are important to me. We’ve been through a lot together, so I want to be there for them on their special day.
But this really solidifies my stand on having weddings at all. When I get married, I’m only having a simple wedding on the beach – with only parents and siblings invited. After the honeymoon, there will be a big dinner for everyone else to attend … but the wedding itself, and all the costs associated with it? No thank you. That’s not my style.

[...] My friend and I split the cost of the wedding gift, and spent about $80 each. The ferry was $150 round trip (BF is going to pay me back for half the cost). I also bought a silver clutch ($30), some shoe grips ($5), and a random $60 (cash) that I didn’t keep track of. Plus $150 for my share of 2 night’s accommodation. So, not too shabby. I think after it was all said and done, I spent about $700 on the wedding – which was right on track with what I had budgeted. [...]
[...] on WestJet for only $565 (taxes and fees included). That’s a savings of $235 from what I budgeted, and it’s basically half the price of the flights I was looking at a couple of weeks ago. So [...]
