Dear Rogers Wireless: I’m back in the game, baby! July 26, 2007

My struggles with Rogers Wireless might have come to an end tonight.
On Jagular’s advice that “third time’s a charm,” I decided to give it one more shot. This time, I got a pleasant sounding guy, and I explained my situation. I told him that I wanted to be on the same plan as the BF. He put me on hold, and a few minutes later said it was doable!!! He said that b/c the billing cycles are off, so I’ll have to call back tomorrow to get it officially changed over, but he would note in my account to the next rep that it was okay and approved. Hoorah!
Now, my bills should come to around $33/month, for a savings of $10/month ($120/year)!!
However, don’t go applauding me just yet about getting such a sweet deal. Do you see that cell phone picture to the left of this post? That’s the Sony Ericsson K790, and tomorrow, it’s going to be mine. Most likely. It currently retails at $409.99 CDN. Expensive, I know. If I agree to a 3-year contract with Rogers, I can get it for $179.99. I’m going to ask if I can get a one-time credit applied to my bill to offset the cost of the phone, but honestly even if I don’t get a discount, I’m still going to get it. I think. My reasoning is this:
- I was going to buy a compact digital camera anyway. I would like to be able to carry one around when it’s not logistically possible to bring my regular, huge camera. The K790 (with 3.2 mega pixels) is being touted as the best camera phone on the market. Any digital camera is going to cost at least $150. Also, 3.2 mega pixels is plenty for me as a spare camera (my regular one has 7.2). My very first camera only had 3.1, and that was fine for me up until last year when I upgraded.
- It will reduce the bulk I carry around on a daily basis. Sometimes I like going without my purse, but I never do because my purse carries my cell phone, camera and iPod in it. All of these items are daily essentials for me it seems. With this new cell phone, I can have all 3 rolled into one. Granted, it could never replace my beloved iPod, but will do for shorter outings (or when I’m on a road trip and my iPod runs out of batteries).
- The BF needs a new cell phone b/c he accidentally dropped his in the water when he was fishing. I would give him my old cell phone … which works perfectly b/c I’ve been wanting a new one for a while anyway.
- Probably the most important point out of all of them: I can afford it. I would never dream of buying this phone if I had to charge it to my credit card or anything like that. I figure, I’m out of debt, I’m contributing massive amounts to my savings/RRSPs already … if I can afford to splurge on a new cell phone without hindering my budget whatsoever, I should be able to.
I was going to wait for the iPhone to launch in Canada, but I can’t justify spending that much on a phone, or paying the monthly data charges just to operate that thing. :) Even though it’s the most gorgeous phone in the entire world.
Anyway, tomorrow I’m back on the phone with Rogers! If I get any sort of credit towards the phone, I’ll consider myself victorious. Otherwise, this battle of wireless wits will have to end in a tie.

[...] I bought my current phone just over 2 years ago, and now I’m itching to get a new one. Plus my current one doesn’t always work very well b/c it got damaged in the car crash. I don’t want to sign a 3-year contract, so I think I’ll either buy one at full price (not likely) or peruse Craigslist and eBay for used Rogers phones. I could also wait until a friend upgrades their phone, and then scoop their old phone for free or for very minimal cost. :) [...]
